Inspiring you to walk.

Good Morning, having a flick round the internet before I get off my bum and do something. Noticed this on Twitter which might be of interest to some people in the UK, especially those who love walking. Yesterday was the start of The Great Big Walk, organised by the Eden Project. It's aim is for five groups of people to walk five different routes starting at Batley Yorkshire, in 21 days. They will be stopping off along the way meeting people at community events. Destinations are Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the South West, and London. Have a look at the web site to see if they are coming your way, you might want to go out and cheer them on.

Here is a little video

They are not coming past my neck of the woods, but no matter, I am happy to walk alone, but if you are looking for company, see if they are coming your way. Anything that promotes walking for exercise has got to be a win win situation.

Catch you later. Toodle pip

Skidby - Beverley - circular walk

Hello. I hope you have all had a lovely day in the sunshine, because I have. Hasn't the weather been glorious, I saw lots of people out with their families, kids, and dogs. I packed a sandwich, a banana, a yogurt, some grapes, and a drink into my small rucksack and went over the bridge to a small village called Skidby. Not the first time I have been here, there is a report elsewhere on the blog about a walk I did in the area. Found it, on the 19th of March 2013, blimey is it four years since I was last here.
Anyway, back to today. Some monkey business going on here. I don't remember seeing him before.
I joined the Oldgate track which is part of the Beverley 20 circular walk. The hedgerows were full of beautiful hawthorn blossom. I went past Folly Wood, and did a right along Dunflat road, crossed over the A164, that was a nightmare, took ages, no one would slow down and let me cross for ages. How inconsiderate. I went up Jillywood Lane, turned left then past Poplar Farm, and crossed over the A1079. That was easy, there was a bridge. I carried on along the track past Model Farm and Old Hall. Then I was flumoxed. Someone has only gone and built a road, a fast busy road, and it wasn't on the map.

The track that I wanted to take wasn't there, obliterated or moved because of the road. I decided to stay on a tarmac road instead, at least it was heading in the right direction. I could see Beverley Minster so I basically had to head towards that. I stopped a nice young cyclist and asked him about the new road. He said it had been opened a year ago, spose I had better buy a new map then if I am going to walk in this area again.

The tarmac path went around the perimeter of a housing estate, I think it must be popular with dog walkers because I saw several piles of poo with a flag stuck in them. Very strange, I've never seen this before. I could do with some of those flags, we have people who don't pick up. Wonder where I can get them from.

Beautiful Beverley Minster, against a clear blue sky.

A little bimble around the inside. In April 2012 I was here before. On that post I put photo's of some textile artworks which were on display, they are still there. If you want to see the pics they are here. It was the last day of a long walk.

On my way again. I went along Keldgate Road through Westwood, which is a large green area that people use for recreational activities. Once over the A1079 I did a left turn down a track heading back in the same direction as I had come, down Moor Lane towards Folly Wood. I never get fed up of country rambles, beautiful.
 Oh dear, some repairs needed.

Back in Skidby, I sat on the bench for ten minutes and finished my sandwich. What a fabulous tree. There is a lot of blossom out at this time of year, pity it falls off so quickly.

All in all, a good days walking, It was hot and I wore a skirt. Everyone was out enjoying the sun. Total walked as checked on bikehike.co.uk was 11 miles.

Now to relax. I'm having trouble getting Mayze in, no point in chasing her around the garden, I have to wait until she wants to come in by herself. I pretend to shut her out, then when she hears the back door opening she comes running. Little madam.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Durham to Darlington

Hello. I feel like I've been trekking for ages, and it's only two days. A couple of blisters to deal with, but otherwise ok. Another 18 miles today.
I thought you might like to see some of the food on offer at breakfast this morning. The Radisson certainly know how to keep the customers happy. There's something for everyone. Pity some of the customers staying on business had to rush their breakfast, I was able to take my time and enjoy the food.

Sorry there are not many walk photo's tonight, I did a lot of road walking, not a lot to see there. My route took me out of Durham on the A176 towards Darlington. The straight forward route would be to follow this, but I got off it and zigzagged on minor roads, looking to get away from the traffic noise. I went through Langley Moor, and Meadowfield, then got on a path and followed the River Wear which is the Weardale Way.
This is the Croxdale Viaduct.

There was one section where a lot of young trees had been chopped down, I thought it looked so sad to see the short trunks, I suppose they will grow again. But then I came across this. They had used the wood to build up the bank to stop the field slipping into the stream. What a good idea to use natural materials.

I carried on along tarmac roads, through Spennymoor, Kirk Merrington, and Newton Aycliffe.

Tonight I am in the Holiday Inn just north of Darlington, next to the A1M. I was hoping to go a little further, but it had been raining since about 2pm, the walk through Newton Aycliffe was not very inspiring, it's a massive housing estate and an industrial estate. Luckily I passed a big Tesco so I was able to get some food for a picnic in my room. So, being a bit damp, and coming across the hotel I decided to call it a day at 5.30pm.

I had a phone call tonight from my cat sitter Janet, everything is hunkydorey there. Tomorrow I'm heading for Northallerton. I imagine there will be some difficulty in finding a bed for the night, being a Saturday night I think the hotels will be busy.

I'm going to watch telly now. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Newcastle to Durham

Hello me hearties, I am surprisingly chipper considering I walked 18 miles today. I don't suppose it will last though, as the week goes on I'm going to feel more and more knackered. But chin up, I shall give it my best shot.
Goodbye Newcastle, it was sunny when I left, sadly though I was not on the sunny side of the river. I thought I had better get on the right side of it, because it would be a long way to the next bridge if I chose the sunny side.

Further along the river at Dunston is this ancient jetty, the middle of it has crumbled. The coal was brought here on wagons and put onto boats. It would be brilliant if these could be restored, though I suspect it would cost a few million to do that.

There are a lot of new houses along the water front.
I turned left and headed for the Watergate Forest Park. The path went through the middle of an estate, look the rubbish that's been dumped. I suspect that some of it could be from the houses that back onto the path, because it isn't wide enough to get a vehicle down there.

The trail through the park was well signposted, I love this iron seat.

The overflow from the lake tumbles down over these rocks.

I followed the Tanfield Railway Path, this railway claims the title of the oldest railway in the world. This is the station, trains only run at the weekends during the winter.

I had a chat to a man who works on site, he told me about a path that goes to Causey Arch. As it was on my route I decided to have a look. It was a windy walk across the fields, but a bit sheltered through the woods.
Here is the Arch, it is the oldest standing railway bridge in the world.

There are steps up to the top and this is the view half way across it.

The next part of the route took me past the entrance to Beamish Open Air Museum. Sadly I didn't have time to look around, this is on my list for a future visit.
I walked through Beamish village and picked up the road through Grange Villa, Edmondsley, Sacriston, heading for Durham.

I was hoping to get a bed at a farm I have stayed at before, I rang but the owner said she has been away and only just come back. There was nothing for it but to carry on into Durham. It was a long slog down the B6532 but it had to be done, the sun was gone and it was getting cold.

Durham is one big building site at the moment, buildings are being demolished, workmen and barriers are all over the place. I traipsed around looking for a room with no luck, it was nearly 6pm, then I bit the bullet and walked into the Radisson Hotel. Whoohoo, pricey, but what the heck, stuff it.

The room is dead posh, the telly screen is like a cinema screen, and the bed is huge. Nice to have a bit of luxury. I'm going to get in the bath now, so please excuse me while I sign off.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

A few pics of Newcastle

Hello from sunny Newcastle, well it was sunny this afternoon, now it's dark and I'm in a nice hotel room, watching Coronation Street. I don't know half the characters on it, haven't seen it for a few years. Oh, just a minute, there's Ken Barlow, he's still soldiering on. Blimey, Amy has just walked in, she's grown up a bit. Not a lot on tonight, might as well switch it off.
Guess who managed to get on the wrong train, ha ha. Should have been one change at Doncaster, I checked the board and got on the Newcastle train on platform 8. Man checked my ticket, I should have got on the train ten minutes earlier on platform 4. I had to get off at York and get on the Inverness train on platform 9, which was stopping at Newcastle. Luckily the man on that train didn't check my ticket so I didn't have to buy another one. I won't have the same problem going back, all I have to do is put one foot in front of the other and follow the dotted lines on the map.
I dropped my bag at the hotel and went for a bimble while there was still a bit of daylight left. I took a few snaps, some of it I have seen before.

I had a walk through the shopping area and bought some food for a picnic in my room.

This looks really nice with the lights on.

6 o clock and it's getting dark.

My cat sitter has sent me a text, pussies are in, they've eaten, and Heidi has had her tablet. It's nice that she keeps me informed.

There is a bath in here, so I'm going to have a soak, I have a hard task ahead of me. Thank you for sending in your walking miles, keep them coming. Some of you seem to think you are not doing as much as you should. Don't be disheartened, it isn't a race, we are not in competition with each other. As long as you are doing some walking, it's better than none.

Thanks for popping in, I'm on the move and I'll keep updating WiFi permitting.
